THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:“The value of a sentiment is the amount of sacrifice you are prepared to make for it.” –John GalsworthyTHE STORY BEHIND THE PHOTO:You are standing on top of Anguila Mesa, looking off the back side towards Mexico. In the lower right hand part of the frame, you can see the river and the ribbon of green that accompanies it as it begins to enter the upper parts of Santa Elena Canyon. That is likely the only lush shade of green you’ll see on this harsh, unforgiving uplift. Many people raft this part of the Rio Grande, entering near Lajitas and going all the way through the mouth of Santa Elena Canyon. I take a slightly different track, enjoying hiking along the banks of the river, or when need be, climbing out and above when the way is blocked below. Old burro trails crisscross these areas as they and other creatures of the desert made their way to and fro to those life-sustaining waters flowing onwards to the Gulf. When you walk it out, you see so many more things that simply cannot be observed by floating down the river. This section, though few realize it, is dotted with dozens of ruins on both sides of the Rio Grande; remains of habitations going back at least 150 years. Most have never been noted on a map, but they once mattered greatly to those who lived in them. Hard to believe to so many that people were born into this world, lived and died in such meager, isolated circumstances. And not a word was ever written about them; their stories lost to time and anonymity much like the dwellings that once sheltered them in this desolate land…–Ben H. Life is like a bunch of roses. Some sparkle like raindrops. Some fade when there's no sun. Some just fade away in time. Some dance in many colors. Some drop with hanging wings. Some make you fall in love. The beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Life you can be sure of, you will not get out ALIVE.(sorry about that)
