WERFEL’S NEW SHOES: VIENNA, AUSTRIA 1946

Six-year-old Austrian boy, Werfel, a resident at the Am Himmel orphanage, shows his joy at receiving a new pair of shoes from the US Red Cross.

This photograph, shot by Gerald Waller, appeared in LIFE Magazine, December 30, 1946. Werfel was eventually brought to America among the many children liberated after the Second World War.
