Serial Paedophile priest Gerald Risdale has admitted to more child sexual abuses, however his lawyer says he shouldnโ€™t serve any more prison time.

For those of you unaware of Gerald Risdale I am sorry to say, but this may be Australiaโ€™s (and one of the worldโ€™s most prolific paedophile priests), he was convicted between 1993 and 2017 of a large number of child sexual abuse and indecent assault charges against 65 children, aged as young as four years.

Risdale had over 29 different placements as a priest and spent on average less than 2 years in each church.

He was being moved around as soon as his crimes were revealed. The first accusation against him came in his very first year as a priest. Imagine if those who knew what was happening, had done their job and handed him to authorities in the first place. How many innocent children would have been saved?

Recently, more of Risdaleโ€™s crimes have come to light, another 10 counts to be precise. He has come forward and pleaded guilty to them and his lawyer is asking that no more time be added to his prison sentence.

Remember the Royal Commission into Institutional responses into Child Sex Abuse recently released unredacted reports that stated George Pell was made aware of Risdaleโ€™s actions and by his inaction allowed him to continue abusing children. Later Pell proceeded to not only write Risdale a character reference but also escorted him to court as his support person. Pell and Risdale had shared accommodation early in their careers in the Catholic Church.

Ten counts of indecent assault and four of buggery against four boys in the 1970s took to 69 the number of Ridsdaleโ€™s known victims, the County Court heard last Monday, though it is not known exactly how many lives he damaged over 27 years of offending while a parish priest across western Victoria.

Ridsdale, 85, has been in prison since 1994 and a handful of prosecutions since have increased his overall jail term to 34 years. The earliest he will be eligible for parole is April 2022. Defence counsel Tim Marsh called on Judge Gerard Mullaly not to increase the non-parole term for a man who has spent 26 years behind bars and whose plea of guilty validated victims who had contacted police.

Mr Marsh acknowledged his submission could be viewed as wanting โ€œno sentenceโ€ but said Ridsdaleโ€™s continued imprisonment gave victims closure, and acknowledged the insight shown by an old man in declining health who faced the likelihood of dying in jail.

Incorporating this punishment into his overall sentence was appropriate, Mr Marsh said, as it was hard to imagine Ridsdale would have been jailed for 34 years had all his crimes been dealt with in the 1990s.

โ€œThere is no sentence you can impose to address the impact on the victims,โ€ Mr Marsh told the judge.

No Mr Marsh it is NOT appropriate to simply give him no more prison time for another 10 charges !

If he was convicted in 1990 or if he is convicted today shouldnโ€™t matter because the fact is, he IS being convicted today and this is a post Royal Commission world and we have had enough of the Catholic Church and the way they hid many paedophiles amongst their ranks !

We are now demanding that paedophile priests serve the amount of prison time that they deserve !

Also Mr Marsh, there IS a sentence you can impose to address the impact on the victims, itโ€™s called life behind bars ! The more time paedophiles serve in prison, the less chance of more children being harmed.

Prosecutor Andrew Moore called for Ridsdaleโ€™s non-parole term to be lengthened. It was inappropriate not to, he said, given the violent, demeaning crimes and physical pain they caused the boys.

Absolutely Mr Moore, he should serve more time. We at FACAA support and salute you because you understand what his victims wantโ€ฆ. Justice in the form of prison time for each charge !

Victims told the court of the lasting emotional trauma they suffered.

Documents show Ridsdale abused four boys in Warrnambool and other towns, including one child who was 12 when plied with beer and attacked on successive nights on a weekend trip away, and another who was sexually assaulted during confession at the family home. The four were aged between seven and 16.

Mr Marsh acknowledged the trust Ridsdale breached in an era when priests were venerated in small communities. Ridsdale told one boy, โ€œDonโ€™t you tell anyone anything, they wonโ€™t believe you over a priest.โ€

So, knowing he breached that trust, surely he must serve more time for another 14 counts ?

One victim said the abuse affected every part of his life, and he now struggled with injuries suffered in falls caused by alcoholism. In a statement he compiled early one morning at a caravan park, the man wrote: โ€œI am single, alone, broke, depressed, embarrassed, forgetful, unemployed, wondering how I can afford and how I will get through tomorrow. Things would have been different had this individual not been part of my life.โ€

The parents of two brothers who were both abused by Ridsdale spoke of the guilt they endured at learning years later of what their priest did.

โ€œWe trusted our innocent, beautiful children with this bastard without question but we should have been more vigilant on their behalf,โ€ they said.

โ€œOur boys deserved better than this in their livesโ€, only to be deceived โ€œby a filthy, conniving make-believe priest and paedophileโ€.

Another victim was furious the Catholic Church knew of the crimes and moved Ridsdale around the state to avoid questions, but was thankful to feel โ€œheardโ€ years later and hoped others might โ€œfind the courage to reportโ€.

Ridsdale had in recent years conceded he should never have been allowed to join the priesthood and Mr Marsh said the former cleric knew at the time he would be moved โ€œif things got too hotโ€.

He knew he would be โ€œmovedโ€, not arrested and charged, not defrocked, just moved to a new area with new potential victims to abuse.

Asked by Judge Mullaly why Ridsdale never volunteered his crimes, Mr Marsh said the โ€œsheer volumeโ€ of names and locations so many years ago made it difficult. The court heard that Ridsdale, who appeared via video link on Monday, is in declining health, recently had bowel surgery and has heart problems. He needs a walking frame to move.

Perhaps Mr Risdale should have thought about his declining health behind bars before raping all of those young boys. Perhaps before he took their innocence and destroyed their potential he should have pondered what life might look like as an old man dying in a prison cell.

He will be sentenced on May 14.

We at FACAA hope the judge considers how this will affect Risdaleโ€™s survivors before sentencing him.

FACAA would like to acknowledge the work of the group known as Ballarat So Sad for helping to bring down monsters like Risdale.

Men walk Out

Men at forty Learn to close softly The doors to rooms they will not be Coming back to. At rest on a stair landing, They feel it Moving beneath them now like the deck of a ship, Though the swell is gentle. And deep in mirrors They rediscover The face of the boy as he practices tying His fatherโ€™s tie there in secret And the face of that father, Still warm with the mystery of lather. They are more fathers than sons themselves now. Something is filling them, something That is like the twilight sound Of the crickets, immense, Filling the woods at the foot of the slope Behind their mortgaged houses. ~ Men At Forty โ€“

Time is a precious gift

The most beautiful thing you can get and give someone dear is time. There are no words, no flowers, no gifts, no time, or time. Because he does not return and what he gave you is only yours, whether it was an hour or a life. Nothing comes back from what you gave. Give your time to your loved ones, because any material thing will pass away, but the memory of the time spent together will remain forever

A Wonderful Sense ~

It โ€œA Wonderful Senseโ€ a poem for wonderful parents, May 10, 2020 (Sunday)
A poem for Mother shall be kind; she was so kind to me, And, with Dad, she helped to make a happy family.
Mum and Dad have got a sense of โ€œWeโ€™re where we need to be,โ€ And we have intrinsic worth.โ€ย  I think Iโ€™d like to see, Everyone infected with that virus seemsย so fair.โ€Ignorance is bliss,โ€ย  Iโ€™ve heard: I wonder why I care, Whether populations should all have such happy folks, Who smile and have such interests and still tell corny jokes, But, since I donโ€™t know why it seems I think that may be nice, Iโ€™ll volunteer at weddings to shout and throw some rice, Proclaiming that most couples should never ever think twice, They should maybe jump right in and throw the happy dice, And hopefully theyโ€™ll win that toss; I think itโ€™s good to try, To grab on faithfully to life, never asking โ€œWhy?โ€
My folks are great, and I am glad they turned out as they are, A lucky couple loving life; they travelled very far.
Love it!ย Show quoted text

โ€œBirthdaysโ€ a poem for Motherโ€™s Day, Sunday: May 10, 2020

โ€œBirthdaysโ€ a poem for Motherโ€™s Day, Sunday: May 10, 2020

On the day of my birth, things were clean and bright, I had energy and giggles, and The Earth was quite the sight, Things were all pristine, or thatโ€™s what Iโ€™ve been told, My room was spic and span; my parents strong and bold. My clothes were new and fresh, and the food we got to eat, Was tasty and nutritious; life was quite the treat. So, Mom cleaned my room, my clothes and fed us right, Dad protected and provided; tucked us in at night. We were healthy and happy, with play, work and study, God seemed to love us all, and The Earth was our buddy, There were holidays, family reunions and mirth, And I thanked lucky stars for the day of my birth.
Yet, the world was turning; soon, rumours of war, And greed and corruption, struck at my core, But my parents assured me, things are OK, And we dusted and cleaned, and we made every day, As good as we could, with birth celebrations, And births multiplied in all of the nations. With more and more people, the air got polluted, And factories flourished, and โ€œhave-notsโ€ now looted, While the clean and the fresh became much less each day, We tried to stay orderly and put stuff away, But the years make us older and weaker and slower. How can we keep up?ย  And thereโ€™s melting of snow.
The Earth is now sick, as the dust piles high, Birthdays still happen, and, yes, we still try,ย To keep things attractive and working a bit, But most days I watch all the dust build and sit, Wishing The Overwhelm would go away, Disease in The World is rampant today. Our leaders are ruthless, and they will proclaim: โ€œOur house is in order,โ€ and others they blame, For poor food and health and working conditions, And not sleeping well and oft-failed missions And birthdays arenโ€™t as they were decades ago, Something is wrong; whatโ€™s this soot on the snow?ย
So, my house is all dirty,ย my clothes allย unclean, The shower and the toilet are faulty, obscene, I try to wash and cut my hair; arthritis grips my life, And Iโ€™m asked what I want; I have no child or wife. Could you tell me how to dust a house thatโ€™s filled with so much dust, Or how to clean the clothes I wear and wipe away the crust, That forms around my cracking lips?ย  My life is now a wreck. Another birthday ushers in; I cradle my poor neck, Thatโ€™s stiff and hurts from decades of trying to figure out, What it takes to live aright; whatโ€™s it all about? On my 64th birthday, what Iโ€™m asking from you, Is what in the world am I supposed to do?
