“LIVING TO EAT MIGHT BE EATING TO LIVE TO DIE?” a poem October 30, 2019. (Wednesday, KARAOKE NIGHT at The Railroad Blues, Alpine, Texas, U. S. A.)
When I was young, we had THIS ONE: “Eat To Live; Don’t Live To Eat,”
And we all said: “Yeah. Good advice; thatSoundsREALLY NEAT.”
Thing is: WE DIDN’T KNOW WHAT THE -F- THAT EVEN MEANT,
But we thought we did &, withGreat KnowledgeLikeThat, weThoughtWe’dMake a dent,
Insuring QUALITY LIVES for ourselves and many, many others,
And time went on, and time really REALLY never, ever “covers,
A multitude of ANYTHING, especially covering sins,”
Some of us contended: “Yeah, I’ve BECOME A really ‘good’ eater,
Avoiding red meat, sugar and the occasional trickORtreater.”
Another? (s)he went vegan, meaning: no animal stuff;
Another? (s)he decided: “I’m (a) fruitarian; fruit’s OBVIOUSLY enough,
Because it was enough for the likes o’ Adam and Eve;
Why not FOR ME? ’cause The Bible’s good advice; I’ll (probably) NEVER LEAVE,
Stuffing lots of fruit, YUMMY FRUIT into my ‘hole,’
BUT WAIT JUST A MINUTE: IcouldBeA’Breatharian’*andPurifyMySoul.”
Yet, with all these dire, dietary strategies, little did we know,
(That) Plotting all these “better” ways to eat was NOT “the way to go,”
Putting us in the category of, you guessed it, “LIVING TO EAT,”
For “Eating to Live” simply suggests: SUGGESTS that you greet,
Each meal amiably, whatever the _ _ _ _ _ it might be,
And give thanks for the lessThanPerfectFood, if you can, but also see,
That IT’S ALL POISON, but (pause) we gotta get SOME kindO’ nutrition,
YET, if we start strategizing’boutWhatWeEat, itPutsYouOn a MISSION,
to LIVE TO EAT, by spending all sorts of time in a state of worry,
Concerned that the next bite might not be GOOD, andThat, perhaps, they’ll bury,
US in “bad company” in the worst, possible part of town,
Where people who don’t “EAT RIGHT” might get put way down.
Fact is?: You eat a lot of poison; a little here; a little there;
“Variety’s The Spice of Life?” SoYouCan(maybe)”BuildUpYourTolerance” to every fare,
Every FAIR AndToxic substance that you will find in EVERY food.
So, EAT TO LIVE, don’t LIVE TO EAT. TryTo EAT TO LIVE TO GROOVE.
