“WHAT’S A BALL AND CHAIN?” a poem April 2, 2019 (Tuesday)

A friend(?) approached the other day [asking] “How’s your ball and chain?”
Well, he-must-have-been-referring-to-someone-I-know! Please, let me explain:

Here’s something that occurs to me:
[Single person that I might appear to be]:
It’s-just – that in this amazing world of ours,
Isn’t EVERYTHING “a ball and chain?” For instance: CARS!
You gotta maintain ’em – repair ’em! and, maybe, wash,
And HOMES! CELL-PHONES! and CLOTHING! Oh, my gosh!
They all need cleaning! and maintaining! and THEY WEIGH YOU DOWN,
And Everyone we-know has “BAGGAGE! How’s-it-possible to-deal-with-the-frown,
Which each new day potentially offers me!
EVERYTHING’S A BURDEN! and EVERYTHING SETS ME FREE!

So, we can all frown and, also, we can all say:
“This is a ball-and-chain!” and “This gets in the way!”
And “I don’t need all these THINGS, weighing me down every day!”
Plus, “If I get involved with THAT – I’m gonna have to pay!”
“It’s such a big responsibility! It takes effort – and all this money!”
“What’s the use of – a wife – or-a-routine?” and “Taxes are-never-funny!”*
Well, yes, life can seem long – and somewhat unfair,
And – you can lose all “the baggage,” and say that you don’t care!
BUT, AS LONG AS WE’RE HERE,
I’LL-TRY-TO-COLLECT EVERY TEAR!
I’ll cherish – my life:
My house, car and wife!
I’ll-TRY! to-cherish all I’ve got,
And hug-and-kiss-and-kiss-and-hug – an awful-lot!
I’ll-TRY to-help! IF I CAN!
Calling every-guy – “a-real fine man,”
And every woman – “an angel in disguise,”
And – I’ll-try to-respect everyone that-cries!
And realize! that I-ain’t very wise!
I’m holding-back the-tears,
Trying-to-deal with-all the-fears,
That each new day offers me!
EVERYTHING’S A BURDEN! and EVERYTHING SETS ME FREE!
