In the last 12 months, 1500 children have been rescued from inside hot cars in Victoria alone.

I honestly thought this would be a message that would be universally well received and understood, sadly it continues happening. 1500 children were rescued from hot cars in Victoria alone, in just the last 12 months.

How is this message not getting through ? How are people not listening and understanding the horrendous ramifications of leaving a child in a closed vehicle in hot weather ?

This week 9 news had yet another example of this absolutely abhorrent insanity !

A toddler was found locked inside a car in Melbourne, as temperatures soared.

With temperatures heading towards 35 degrees, firefighters had to break into a car parked on the Dunns Road in Mornington at around 1.30pm recently after a two-year-old girl was spotted inside.

The girl was “conscious and breathing” and the mother returned to the car a short time after the emergency services arrived. Only this week, Ambulance Victoria revealed that there had been more than 1500 people found locked in cars in the last 12 months.

Some parents who have repeatedly left children in hot cars have been charged with neglect, personally I want to see any parent who leaves their child in a hot car charged with much worse offences like child endangerment, assault and deprivation of liberty.

With the mercury expected to nudge 38 over the Christmas break, we are still seeing kids locked in hot cars. They give excuses like “I was only going to be a minute” or “I was just ducking in to pick something up from the shops”. There is no excuse what-so-ever to leave your children inside a hot car !

On a typical summer day, the temperature inside a car (even with the windows rolled down a little) can quickly rise above 50 to 60 degrees. We dare anyone to try and sit in a car that is that hot, for even just 1 minute.

The heat is unbearable, as someone who cuts weight for fights being in a sauna is something I am used to but even I can’t cope in a hot car for longer than 2 minutes. The heat is just inhumane and people are still leaving their kids in the cars while they shop.

Absolutely appalling !

My question is this, why are they not charging those that leave their kids in hot cars with harsher penalties ?
This can be a life threatening situation, it’s just not worth the risk.

Sadly, at the moment they may be charged with child endangerment, a pathetic slap on the wrist. Hopefully there will be more charges added due to the publicity this case is receiving (you can get it more publicity by simply sharing this story on your timelines and tagging your friends), hey, it can’t hurt.

Children DIE in hot cars, they die horrible deaths. Please don’t leave your children in hot cars, there is no excuse to not take them with you. Temperatures rise very quickly in a locked car…never leave them alone, not even for a minute ! (A)
