The most elegant violinist I have ever encountered, Yehudi (which means: THE JEW) Menuhin was born in New York City, after his parents moved there. His parents, one day, were looking for an apartment to rent and were told by a landlady that she was proud to never rent to Jews; after that, Yehudi’s mother made a vow to name their unborn child “THE JEW!”
Yehudi was born, began learning violin at an early age, and presented his first concert with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra AT AGE 7!
He was interested in yoga, way before that was even popular, and he was good friends with the famous sitar player Ravi Shankar.* The two often practiced together
In Hebrew, Hephzibah literally means: “My delight is in Her!”Yehudi and his sister Hephzibah, who was a well-known pianist, often presented concerts together. While visiting Australia on tour, they met a brother and sister, and everyone got married!! The couple they married were: Lindsay and Nola Nicholas, heirs to the Australian “Aspro” pharmaceutical fortune.Menuhin was a lifelong friend with one of the greatest conductors that ever lived: Bruno Walter.* – Sitar virtuoso Ravi Shankar performed at festival in Woodstock, N. Y. in 1969!
