Those who say it can’t be done should best get out of the way of those doing it !
About 8 years ago we started FACAA with one very simple goal, to end child abuse once and for all. Not to take down the instances of child abuse, not to only help heal survivors while allowing the problem to continue but to stop the problem dead in it’s tracks !
A LOT of people told us it simply couldn’t be done, we were told to just help heal the survivors (which we do but only as a means to break the cycle of child abuse and thus bring it to an end) and not bother trying to go after the big major problem of child abuse itself.
That’s not our way, our way is no matter how big the fight we are all in, simply because it’s what MUST be done. Child abuse has gone on far too long and it’s time has come ! Why and what can you do to help ? well our awesome Survivor’s Sunday author Genevieve Elliott explains below.
When we survive something, whether that be a natural disaster, crime or severe accident, it gives us a greater sense of empathy for others in similar situations. For many people, that then becomes a desire to help make positive changes in the lives of those people. Indeed, that is how many great causes are started and fuelled.
When you have been a victim of child abuse or domestic violence though, you often have a diminished sense of self-worth and so you can be left thinking things like “But the problem is huge. What difference could I possibly make?”
Many of the inboxes to our page too are from inspirational survivors who want to help and are asking us how they can do that.
We are all “only one person” but together we are a force to be reckoned with.
You can help by sharing our posts and signing petitions – awareness and a voice where it matters are critical. You can help by being mindful of suppression orders and the right to privacy for victims, and by not making comments that threaten violence on our pages. We understand and share the anger and frustration but in order to keep on getting legislative changes made we must operate within the law as it stands.
Soon we will be running some research programs too, and we will be asking our followers to help out with those where relevant. That will be a big help in guiding us as we set about strengthening our existing programs and working out what else is needed.
Importantly though, aside from all of that, you can be a major help at an individual, grass roots level. Report your fears if you see a child in need of protection. Reach out to those who are hurting and shell shocked after finding that their child has been abused. Take the time to simply listen to people who are hurting and needing some support. Show that you care and take the actions needed to support those around you.
If every person did that on a regular basis, just imagine what kind of changes can be made in the long term.
It is a huge task, the problems are varied and deeply ingrained, but it is not impossible.
As the saying goes “Those who say it cannot be done should not interrupt those who are doing it” (GE)
