“M ONDAY*, I’ M EETING M ARVELOUS Y OU!” a poem. “I Found My Best Friend, Or Did She Find Me?” April 30, 2018.
When-I-was-young – and the weekend arrived,
It-was-TIME TO PARTY: Kids-’round-town-would-drive,
We’d drink just a little and act pretty cool,
Weekends are glorious! Just-forget-about-school –
To spend time with “friends” and plan splendid futures,
And-there-were-fights, And-we’d-cuss! If-injured, They’re sutures,
To “patch your friends up,” and get rested on Sunday,
And creep-back-into-school, The first thing on Monday,
And they’d sit there in class, and gossip and laugh,
All those “friends,” that were with their-hearts, all-split-in-half:
All those BEST FRIENDS FOREVER, smiling and gay,
THAT I WAS SO LONELY, ‘Cause no friends had I!
I did have some cousins, and we’d often say, “Hi!”
But, FRIENDS? I don’t think so; so, I-waited-around,
Hoping that one would show up: I’D BE FOUND –
And, I waited through high school; I went off to “U,”
Got married! No children – My “wife” had no clue,
That-I-wanted-a-friend, and I hoped she’d be it,
But (pause) It-never-happened; WE JUST DIDN’T “FIT,”
So, I lived on – for decades, And gave up my hope,
For a real, best friend: Someone!
How to cope!?
And endure days on Earth? YES, THE DAYS CAN BE LONG,
WHEN NEVER A FRIEND – EVER DOES COME ALONG!
AND YEARS HAVE PASSED BY ME – I-WAS-STILL-WITH-”MY FOLKS,”
WHO LOVED-ME AND TREASURED MY CUTE, LITTLE JOKES –
AND, THEN, ONE DAY, “FRIENDS,” (Tears here!) SHE FINALLY “SHOWED UP!”
SHE’S-THE-ONE, MY-BEST-FRIEND! SHE’S MY SOUL-FRIENDLY CUP! (Tears here too!?) (and smiles!) (and shivers – and stuff!)
- Moon Day! 🙂
